If you've ever brought a phone in for trade-in and wondered exactly how that number was worked out, you're not alone. Trade-in valuation can feel like a bit of a black box — here's a clear look at how it actually works, so you know roughly what to expect before you even walk in.

The Starting Point: Model and Market Value

Every valuation starts with the base market value of your exact model — brand, storage size, and sometimes colour all factor in, since some configurations hold value better than others. This is the ceiling; everything else is a deduction from there based on condition.

The Condition Grades, Explained

Most trade-in and second-hand pricing in the industry (including ours) uses a version of these four grades:

Like New No visible scratches or marks, screen and body in excellent condition, battery health strong, and everything functions perfectly. This gets the closest to full market value.

Good Light signs of use — minor scratches that aren't easily noticeable, or very light wear on the frame. Everything still functions fully, and the screen has no cracks or deep scratches. This is the most common grade for a well-cared-for phone that's been used daily for a year or two.

Fair Noticeable wear — visible scratches, small dents, or a frame with more obvious signs of use. May include a screen with light scratches (not cracks), or a battery health that's dropped below ideal levels. Still fully functional, just showing its age.

Damaged Cracked screen, significant dents, non-working parts, or a battery that needs replacing. This doesn't mean no value — it just means the valuation accounts for the repair that will be needed before the device can be resold, or the device may be more suitable for parts.

What Actually Moves the Needle Most

Based on what we see day to day, these factors tend to affect trade-in value the most:

• Screen condition — cracks or deep scratches have the biggest single impact
• Battery health — a battery below 80% health noticeably lowers value, since it will likely need replacing before resale
• Functionality — anything not working (camera, speaker, buttons, charging) is deducted individually
• Original accessories — having the box, charger, or original cable can add a little back
• Activation lock / account status — a phone not properly signed out can't be valued at all until that's resolved

Why It's Worth Getting It Checked Even If You Think It's "Damaged"

A common misconception is that a phone with a cracked screen or a dead battery is worth trading in. In many cases, it's actually the opposite — devices in the "Damaged" category can sometimes get a better overall outcome through a quick, affordable repair first, which then bumps the device up a grade.
