Buying a second-hand iPhone is one of the smartest ways to get a premium device without paying full retail price. But it's also where a lot of buyers in Malaysia get burned — a locked phone, a hidden water damage history, or a battery that's already worn out. Here's exactly what to check before you hand over your money.

1. Check the IMEI and Activation Lock

Every iPhone has a unique IMEI number, which you can find by dialling *#06# on the phone itself, or checking Settings > General > About. This lets you verify the phone hasn't been reported lost or stolen, and confirms it matches any documentation the seller provides.

Just as important: make sure the phone is not locked to the previous owner's Apple ID. A phone with Activation Lock still active can leave you unable to set up the device at all — always ask the seller to sign out of iCloud (Settings > [name] > Sign Out) before you pay.

2. Check Battery Health

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and look at the Maximum Capacity percentage. As a general guide, anything above 85% is considered a good, healthy battery for a used phone. Also check that Peak Performance Capability shows "Normal" rather than a performance-management warning.

3. Inspect It Physically

• Screen — check for scratches, cracks, dead pixels, or discolouration, and make sure touch response feels normal across the whole screen
• Frame and back — light scuffs are normal for a used phone, but deep dents or a back cover that isn't sitting flush could point to drop damage or even a swollen battery
• Charging port and buttons — test the charging port with a cable, and press every button (power, volume, mute switch) to check they respond properly
• Cameras — check both front and rear cameras focus properly and the lenses are scratch-free

4. Look for Water Damage

Water damage isn't always obvious from the outside. Signs to watch for include corrosion around the charging port, unusual condensation under the camera lens, or the device simply behaving oddly (random restarts, muffled speaker). If you have any doubt, it's worth having it checked by someone who can open the device up and inspect properly.

5. Test Everything in Person

Before paying, actually test:

• Face ID or Touch ID
• Front and rear cameras
• Speakers, microphone, and Bluetooth
• SIM slot and signal (bring your own SIM to test if buying from an individual seller)
• Charging with your own cable

6. Ask About Warranty

Most private sellers won't offer any warranty at all — if the phone develops a fault a week later, that's entirely on you. This is one of the biggest differences between buying from an individual online versus a proper store.
